Background:
The Joe Rogan Experience is a podcast hosted by American comedian, presenter, and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan. It was initiated on December 24, 2009, on YouTube by Rogan and comedian Brian Redban, who was its sole co-host and producer until 2012 when Jamie Vernon, who would eventually take over production, was hired to co-produce. By 2015, it was one of the world's most popular podcasts, regularly receiving millions of views per episode, also including a wide array of guests, including business magnate Elon Musk, whistleblower Edward Snowden, Senator Bernie Sanders, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and President Donald Trump. From December 2020 to February 2024, the podcast was exclusively available on Spotify, with highlights uploaded onto the main Joe Rogan Experience YouTube channel. The podcast was originally recorded at Rogan's home in California, before moving to a private studio in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Production was relocated to Austin, Texas after the podcast was licensed exclusively to Spotify in 2020.
The Joe Rogan Experience podcast is a long form conversation hosted by comedian Rogan with friends and guests that have included comedians, actors, musicians, MMA fighters, authors, academics, politicians, artists, and beyond. The Joe Rogan Experience is consistently ranked one of the most popular podcasts and currently distributed by Spotify. Rogan’s podcast pioneered long form conversation video podcasts. With over 2000 episodes, an average of 2 - 3 hours in length each, the show has become a destination for open dialogue with a wide range of guests and perspectives.
It is widely thought that Rogan's interview with Donald Trump helped the former president to win the 2024 election, particularly due to the show's largely male and young audience. Rogan also negotiated for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to appear on the show, but it did not happen; an adviser to Harris's husband Doug Emhoff said that "There was a backlash with some of our progressive staff that didn't want her to be on it".
Since 2002, Rogan has provided color commentary for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Rogan’s passion for MMA began with martial arts practice at the age of 13. Within two years, the Boston native earned a black belt and soon became Massachusetts full contact Tae Kwon Do champion for four consecutive years. By the age of 19, Rogan won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championship and as lightweight champion, he went on to beat both the middle and heavyweight titleholders to obtain the Grand Championship.
A standup comedian for over 30 years, Rogan has done seven comedy specials for Netflix. Film credits include Here Comes the Boom (2012) and Zookeeper (2011). Rogan hosted Joe Rogan Questions Everything (2013) for the SyFy channel. Rogan hosted the competition reality series Fear Factor on NBC in 2001-2006 and again in 2011-2012. Prior to Fear Factor, Rogan played Joe Garrelli, the resident electrician on the hit NBC comedy series NewsRadio.
Rogan regularly performs stand-up locally in Austin at his club Comedy Mothership as well as touring across the country and internationally.
